Kitimat & Terrace

To Kitimat (Hwy 37 South): Just before you reaching Terrace is the Junction to Hwy 37 South which leads to Lakelse Provincial Park, Lakelse Hot Springs and Kitimat.

Lakelse Provincial Park:
This 156 campsite park with beaches, nature trails and mature forests is located 14km (9mi) from Terrace.

Lakelse Hot Springs:
These very hot and odorless hot springs are mostly inaccessible and too hot for bathing but nearby resorts channel and use the springs.

Kitimat:
Kitimat is home of the Aluminum Company of Canada (Alcan) due to its proximity to the Nechako river and its potential hydroelectric power. It sits at the head of the Douglas Channel, a 90km (55.8) salt-water fjord that leads to the Pacific Ocean. Famous for its fishing, the rivers offer great salmon, trout and steelhead fishing. Go deep-sea fishing in the Douglas Channel, troll for salmon, halibut and cod or set pots for shrimp, crab and abalone. There is also excellent hiking surrounding. Tours and boat charters are available.

Radley Municipal Park:
Located on Dike Road, Radley Park is home to B.C.'s oldest Sitka Spruce tree which is more than 11m (36ft) around and 50m (164ft) tall and 500 years old.

Kitimat Centennial Museum:
Located in the city centre, the museum features displays of fossils, natural history and Haisla Nation artifacts.

Kitlope Valley:
This is the world's largest intact coastal temperate rain forest with stands of trees over 800 years old found in the protected watershed. The Haisla Nation Rediscovery Society offers rediscovery camps here in the valley. The Kitlope Valley is located 100 km (62 miles) southeast of Kitimat.

Terrace:
Taking its name from the natural terraces cut by the Skeena River, Terrace is located on the Yellowhead Highway 210 km (130 miles) southwest of Smithers and 140km (86.8mi) east of Prince Rupert. Once a port of call for the Skeena river Sternwheelers, it is now a distribution and government centre for the northwest. Fishing and forestry are the main economic stays within the area. One of the largest spring salmon ever caught (42 kg) was landed on the Skeena shores. This region is home to the rare white Kermodei bear (a sub-species of the black bear).

Heritage Park:
The heritage park offers tours of original log buildings and is located on Kerby Road.

Northern Lights Studio:
The private gardens here are open to public viewing at selected times. See original totem poles, a Japanese styled garden with fountain and gold fish pond. The Northern Lights Studio and garden is at 4820 Hall Avenue.

Kitsumkalum Village:
New totem poles, First Nations crafts and the House of Sim-oi-ghets are located near the Yellowhead Highway on the west side of Terrace.

The Nisga'a Memorial Lava Bed Provincial Park is an interesting stop. Access is 3 km (2 miles) west of the Infocentre via the Kalum Lake Road/Nisga'a Highway then turn north and continue approximately 80 km (50 miles).
